First bug found: beacons on LMS show beacons for players that are out (since they aren't "real" spectators). Fixing as we speak!

Some code is shared amongst servers to reduce total downloads. Back online! My aim is to keep the servers running stable, little downtime (unlike the old days huh? ) But if there's a bug, it shall be ironed out at once!

Snipefortress is just over 1MB. However, size isn't that great of a deal since everyone gets their netspeed fixed at 10KB/s. So even old clients can download at a reasonable pace (never more than 5 minutes download for the biggest maps -- being Abysse and Sprinta).

I personally think Ranel is a very bad map, like most of the other "CB"/"LE"/"UGL"/"pro" maps.... The only thing I might consider adding are improved versions of retail maps. But then again, I don't want to remove the original maps either... so then you'd end up with 2 versions of Command for instance. And you don't want people to first vote for retail Command and then for Command-SuperCBv10 or whatever. Solution might be to stop votes for similar maps.... perhaps something for the future. But for now there've been enough changes..

Just.. if you say ranel is a bad map, then coret might be one as well (if u kno what i mean)
But tbh, I have other favs among the pro maps, like AreaN, Azcanize, Bleak, Cyno, Gataka or Vaultcity.

My grapplinghook bind isn't working anymore - is there a specific reason why that should be? Edit: hmm, neither Fire or Alt-Fire triggers the grapple for me. Other people seem to be managing, so I don't know what my problem is. Suggestions?

Also, I noticed that the "!HOOK" message didn't appear when I entered the server just now, has that feature been removed?

Yeah, I removed the !HOOK command (rarely used). Though the bind is unchanged, so this seems to be an isolated issue. Try typing 'getweapon grappling' in your console. That should bring up the hook (typing !HOOK used to bind 'getweapon Grappling Hook' to CTRL, which is essentially the same).

If that does indeed select the hook, then your binds are corrupted. And I think they are, for the Fire/AltFire commands also use custom binds (since they rely on a custom function). Do you by any chance have 'read only' set to your User.ini file so the server can't modify it? That's about the only explanation I can give, though even with the read only attribute set, I think the binds would still be activated during runtime, but just not saved.

In normal operation, the server double binds all your Fire and AltFire keys with HookFire. This could be an example portion of a User.ini file after it's been successfully initialized:

LeftMouse=HookFire|Fire
RightMouse=HookFire|AltFire

Substitute LeftMouse and RightMouse for your fire keys. If these entries exist in your User.ini file, then all should be well.

Though I must emphasize that your problem is highly unusual! Getting sick


On a different note: I've been catching glimpses of people wondering whether damage can be dealt using the hook. The answer is: no. However, I don't mind incorporating this. Is this a desirable feature yes/no?

Rob - thanks for the detailed explanation: those settings don't exist in my User.ini file - I wonder whether this might be a Vista permissions issue again, I've got UT installed in a directory called c:\games\unrealtournament, so administrator privileges would be required for write access (or so goes my understanding).
I'll try starting UT as an 'administrator' and check whether that makes a difference.

Just to clarify - I can select the grapplinghook, it comes up no problem, it just won't 'fire'.

Edit: tried that, and it didn't seem to make any difference - the 'date modified' timestamp for my user.ini file matches the date/time I last entered the server (10 minutes ago), but there's no 'HookFire' anywhere. I think I'll temporarily rename my user.ini file, let UT build a new one, and see if that makes any difference.

Edit2: no dice - again, I can select the grapple, it just... doesn't do anything!

Edit3: I've just noticed that if I change any setting whilst I'm playing, close the options screen, then re-open it, the change isn't saved...
Separately, the vote box isn't showing up, and !VOTE doesn't make it appear either.

That definitely doesn't sound right. The fact that any changes made to your configuration aren't saved, does give me some relief; at least the problem isn't limited to the server itself.

I might make a confirmation check so that if the server fails to add the settings to User.ini, it will kick you out. While this does NOT solve your problem, it is able to show me if anyone else is affected by this ( ) An easy solution for you might be to manually change your bindings from Fire to HookFire|Fire as shown in the example. But the fact that you have to do this means there's a serious problem and I hope it's just you(r client).

I will try to connect to my servers on Vista later on. However, the version I have here is stripped of all security features to make it run more like XP than anything.... so I'm not sure how conclusive the result from that test might be.

Edit: Vista test was successful. I will add the confirmation check later this week... (I think - like the idea). !VOTE also worked fine. I have received word from a few players (like 2 or 3) they are unable to call the vote screen, so that's quite interesting in itself. It could be one of those bugs that plagued Haris3 - he was not able to move in maps like EternalCaves and Snipefortress. I never did find out what caused that, but it only seemed to affect a very small minority of players. Got to love UT... Anyway the console command to manually call mapvote is 'mutate bdbmapvote votemenu'. However, that probably won't spawn MapVote for you either since that's basically what gets called by typing !VOTE...

I apologize for the inconvenience, but I hope you understand I can only work with the tools I'm given. I write code that *should* work on UT clients, but I cannot solve problems that are either due to bugs in UT itself or client side problems. 'T is frustrating nonetheless.

I know I must run UT as a super user(administrator) in Linux.If I don't,I can't even change my name/set brightness.
Vista is bad when it comes to compatibility(only install software that's from 2006 or newer).You should have dual-boot for UT(try Ubuntu Linux or WinXP).

And about hook damage - it would be nice to have something like when you throw it at the enemy it does damage when hit(15?) and does damage when released(20?) - like cutting the enemy apart,makes his movement slower/worse(like the pulse gun) while holding the enemy with it.

It could work like the Scorpions hook from Mortal Kombat.
