My anticheat was cracked. I've finished a new one which I myself cannot crack (unlike the previous installment). Currently only LMS is online, so I can work out the kinks. Besides, making it compatible with CTF takes time... so that's it for now.

How was it cracked/who cracked it?

And do you have an estimate as to when the ND server is restored?

I caught some British guy, but i'm sure others have been using it. The client file that allows for the execution of custom admin commands had been tampered with, causing the client not to carry out any issued commands (including banning).

The new anticheat is tamper proof; at least I can't crack it. It also shows banned players attempting to join (including their IP address) and I've optimized the admin commands (rename w/o disconnect for example).

Getting around the ban itself isn't that hard. As Milan (is that right?) stated before: "all bans can be circumvented" (loose quote) - especially if we are limited to using UT's scripting language, but it will keep out the majority of troublemakers. Actually cracking the anticheat (so it no longer works) is a different story and I challenge you all

It's endlessly depressing that there's always someone who has to spoil it for everyone; the game would be more stable, more accessible, more responsive without the need for all of these counter-measures. Scum.

The two biggest trouble-makers on demo were called 'box' and 'milk'. They socialised with some of the full-version cheat making crowd, and we didn't have much in the way of resources for combating it. A couple of people did modify CSHP (a guy called [TA]Hoser - {MERC}FuzzyLogic implemented the first anti-cheat for demo. Oh, and [BEE]NutCase came up with another demo variant called CSCC), but it was a big job because a bunch of functions aren't implemented in the demo version of the API.

Server admin have resorted to banning large IP blocks to prevent people from address hopping, but obviously that's a very blunt weapon and you often end up denying access to innocent players. I don't have any interest in trying to break legitimate software - even if the knowledge was there - I'd much rather put my energy into something positive and constructive. Perhaps these people will mature and grow out of it, but then, there's always the next generation....

Cheaters are ALWAYS one step forward.UT(and other games too) & cheaters problem is similar to the Windows & viruses problem:
cheat => discovery => cheat => discovery
The only way is to make the game itself cheatproof.By methods of encryption,data moving(the hackers hook the 'bad' code in one part of the game - if that part could move itself in the memory then it would be harder to hack the game) OR by activating counters
with a tool like cheat-vote,so players can vote if somebody's cheating and then the server can either kick the cheater,pause the whole match or activate god mode for those who don't cheat.But I think as soon as UT99 becomes more forgotten the cheaters will go.Other note:hook cheaters use only Windows!Hooks don't work in Linux/Mac OS as they are compiled to work in Windows only.
The best way would be to have an in-game scanner that scans the client's machine processes and if it finds (as an example) HelioS hook it kills the process and bans the cheater using all methods available(user name,player name,PC name,GUID,IP address),warns his ISP,restarts his PC and (why not ) installs boot sector virus on his hard drive(so he can't start the machine).There are two types of cheaters.Ones know how to bypass bans and make cheats & others who are so called script kiddies - they just use the cheats made(and pay for them!) and they are dumb too - ban them once and you did it.
