| Just for the heck of it, I was browsing Google results for TeamSpeak servers (TeamSpeak is a voice chat application), and came across several advertising 'Free' services. With my sceptical hat on, I read more and found... that there actually are free servers out there! I've registered a channel at a server - possibly running on a domestic connection, given the address - but it all seems to work. I know that some people are put off by the idea of voice-chatting, and that's understandable, but if anyone's interested details are below. You can download TeamSpeak for Windows, Linux and Mac here: http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads Windows users, for example, want to choose first the TeamSpeak 2 Client, then also the TeamSpeak 2 Client (Updated Executable) - which adds extra functionality and bug fixes to the first download (install them in that order). You'll need a microphone for voice-chatting (see the end of this message for more about this), of course - if it's not plugged in when you start TeamSpeak you'll get the: - Quote :
- TDSoundIn.Open: No sound driver is available for use
...error message - so remember to do that first! Once it's started-up click on Settings, then Options: On the Sound Devices tab, choose Direct Sound under Sound Driver, select your Microphone under Input Device, and then your Speakers under Output Device: ...then click OK. Now open the Connection menu, and click the Connect menu item: We're going to add the server address. Right-click anywhere in the white space to the left, and from the pop-up menu choose Add Server. Select the new server entry (it'll just be called 'New Server' at this point), and then fill in the details in the panel to the right, as follows (choose whatever Nickname you want to use to identify yourself): A few things to note here. You can choose to register yourself with the server by choosing the 'Self' menu, then slecting 'Register With Server' to create an account - that way no-one else can impersonate you - but at the moment be sure to click the Anonymous check-box. By filling in the channel details you'll automatically connect to the channel I created (I was a bit presumptuous and called it 'BLS & Friends') - otherwise you'll start in the 'lobby' room and have to find the channel manually (not hard, but an unnecessary step). I've set a channel password to: noneshallpass ...exactly as it's written there, no spaces, all lower-case. That way there shouldn't be any uninvited guests. Once you've done all that click the Connect button and you should be in, all being well. Hope to see some of you there sometime! p.s. you can text chat in channels to - so if you've not got a microphone you can still get involved, and hear what chatters are saying.

Given the low bandwidth requirements (afaik - I never used this application myself), it lends itself perfectly to home hosting. Here's looking at you, "DarkShadow"!
